A lot of people assume that as a Psychologist, everyone in my world supports my passion for changing the way the world views mental health. I wish!
There are many who just don’t believe in Psychology – even in my world. But that doesn’t stop me from being me. It doesn’t stop me from having the conversations – even with the haters!
Because you never know who might be struggling. You never know who might be listening. People need to know that there are multiple schools of thought. And just because some in your world might question yours, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I want to do as much as possible to let others know that silence is the enemy. Silence keeps you isolated. Connection helps you heal.
More specifically…. Connecting with others who get it! This won’t just change your world …. It will open up an entirely new world for you. A world without judgment. Whether it’s sharing a story with someone close or reaching out to volunteer at a local organization – you can start connecting with others who get it right now.
Join a supportive community…. Faces of Mental Illness is a group of people working together to break stigmas and inspire hope. We’re always welcoming new members. You can observe, interact, contribute a story to one of our books, or even become a sponsor for the next book: Faces of Mental Illness: For Anxiety.
NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. You can find resources as well as events in your area at NAMI.org
Start a conversation with someone who makes you feel safe. It can be about mental health in general – or it can be more personal. It opens the door.
And if you’re feeling brave, consider doing something VISIBLE. Post something on social media honoring Mental Health Awareness Month. Grab your favorite RUTHLESS item to show your support.
And you’re welcome to attend my monthly, interactive Ask Sam event. It’s a time to discuss whatever is on your mind – confidentially. Sign up for the May 24th event here.
