Adopt the anti-hustle
Are you constantly hustling and pushing only to burn out and crash before getting back up and repeating the cycle?
We live in this fast-paced go, go, go world where we have normalized and even glamorized, pushing through exhaustion and overwhelm. . As a result, people are unaware that taking healthy, planned breaks can improve their functioning… in so many ways.
So it IS possible to have a successful life or business without working like there is no tomorrow to the point of burnouT.
In one of this week’s episodes of The Be Ruthless Show, Misti Patrella and I discuss The Anti-Hustle, and how you can finally jump off your unhealthy hustle/burnout cycle to create a healthier, more mindful life. This episode is a reminder to pause more no matter how busy life gets.
We often think that we need to give our all to our business, education, or family because if we don’t, we might lose control or lose clients or income. As a result, we don’t realize we have reached our breaking point until it’s too late.
We have led such busy lives to earn a living, be the best employee of the year, grow the company, and be the perfect parent. But if we are doing this at the expense of our health, is it worth it?
Pausing can often make us feel guilty, especially when we think we can use that time to do more important things. We aren’t taught that rest is equally as necessary, if not more!
Simply knowing yourself well is the first step to creating more pause in your life. Knowing what makes you feel drained and precisely what you need to do to fill your cup back up can help you avoid burnout.
It might be as simple as taking a nap or a stroll in the park before moving on to your next project. I set up reminders on my phone to get outside in nature every day because if I go too long without going outside, I don’t feel great, which affects me mentally.
A constant reminder to stop comparing yourself to others can also help you avoid burnout. We need to remind ourselves that everybody is different, and what works for another person might not work for you. Comparing yourself to others is like willingly taking poison; it can consume you, affecting your mental health and your relationships with yourself, your work, and the people in your life.
Be mindful of comparing yourself to others, even when it comes to destressing. Remember that we are all different, and there is no need to put unnecessary pressure on yourself just because someone else’s way of destressing seems better than yours.
For the longest time, I viewed slowing down as lazy because I didn’t know differently. I didn’t realize that taking mindful breaks and having intentional free time was an option. We were told to “Follow your dreams” in the generation I grew up in, but we weren’t also told, “You are allowed to stop.”
Be accepting, kind and patient with yourself as you practice incorporating a healthy routine into your life. It might bring up feelings of laziness and guilt, and this is normal. Avoid using words like lazy and should! Replace them with words such as resting and pausing.
The goal of the anti-hustle is to stop, breathe, and cut yourself some slack. Because in this world of constant hustle and pushing, you are allowed to take breaks too.
It’s in the moments of pause where you can experience those life-changing epiphanies that are essential for growth, for making important decisions in life, and for creating a life that fulfills you.
